Hoglan student exemplifies creativity, respect

From dancing to drawing pictures and reading to helping other students, Hoglan fourth-grader Addison Reed impresses school staff.

Addison’s interest in creative pursuits is evident. She said she enjoys music class because it gives her a chance to dance, while art class takes the mantle as her favorite class.

“Her strong point is just her love of learning, like nothing is better for her than when she finishes a book and she gets challenged by another one,” said Hoglan fourth-grade teacher Megan Turbiville. “She just loves reading a lot, so I’ve just seen that that’s a real positive for her.”

Among her favorite reads are the Pete the Cat series and the Humphrey book series. She is currently working on a book from the Percy Jackson series, too.

Addison enjoys reading so much that she goes well over the school’s recommended 25 minutes of reading per night.

Drawing is another of her favorite activities, particularly freehand drawing. She said she also enjoys playing on her phone in her free time, including the game “Gacha Studio.”

“You can dress up characters and battle people,” Addison said of the game.

Her mother, Lindsey Martin, said where Addison is relatively reserved in school, she shows a more extraverted side of herself at home.

“She’s just a lot of fun,” Martin said. She gets to see her daughter at school, too, because she works in food service at Hoglan. Fellow food service employee Lillyanne Robinson is also impressed by Addison.

“She’s very respectful to the teachers, to us lunch ladies and she just makes learning fun for the students,” Robinson said.

Turbiville said Addison’s quiet demeanor doesn’t stop her from being a leader in class.

“She’s always stepping up when there’s a new student (or) when someone needs help,” Turbiville said.

She said Addison’s artistic interest matches well with her schooling.

“It’s great that she has that artistic side and that it comes out through the academics,” Turbiville said.
