Dance Konnection Christmas Extravaganza set for Sunday

The public is welcome to check out a holiday season celebration Sunday afternoon at the Marshalltown High School-Community Auditorium.

Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA School of Dance/Dance Konnection Director Kimi Kups-Benson said performances will take place 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the auditorium, 1602 S. Second Ave.

“It’s our annual Christmas program that we put on, and it’s called Christmas Extravaganza,” she said.

This year’s theme is “Christmas in Tinseltown” and will feature dances inspired by Christmas movies, shows and more.

While the event has been held at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum for the past 14 years, damage from the July 19 tornado has caused the event to move to the auditorium this year.

Kups-Benson said audience members are free to come and go as they please during the event. The performance has raised money every year for various charities, and this year the group chose to send funds to Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) to help with the agency’s tornado recovery efforts.

“This year, obviously with everything that’s happened in Marshalltown we’re keeping everything local,” Kups-Benson said. She said some of the money will also go toward the dance group to cover rental costs for use of the auditorium.

Guests will be asked to give a $5 donation at the door. Santa Claus will also be on-hand for pictures at $3 per photo to go toward the YMCA Dance Scholarship program.

Instead of the usual concession stand, Kups-Benson said a silent auction will be held to raise more dollars for MICA.

“We’ve got some amazing things,” she said, listing Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Timberwolves tickets, hotel stays and more among auction prizes.

The children who will perform Sunday will be ages 3 to 18. Kups-Benson said they are excited for the event this weekend.

“The kids have worked hard on their routines,” she said.
