Girls state swimming and diving meet kicks off Friday

T-R PHOTO BY ADAM SODDERS - Several tents sit outside the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA building Thursday ahead of the state swim meet this weekend.

There was already a group of tents pitched outside the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA Thursday afternoon — and with good reason.

Some of the state’s best swimmers and divers will gather at the Y Friday and Saturday to compete in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Association State Swimming and Diving Meet.

The Y has hosted the meet every year since 2004, and this year there are some key differences in the schedule of events compared to previous years. Preliminary swimming events will be held Friday while the finals and diving will be held Saturday. Previously, diving events were held Friday and swimming events on Saturday.

The top six finishers in each event will be awarded medals on a podium.
