How and where to vote

Iowa’s polls are open at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.

In Iowa you are not qualified to vote if you have been convicted of a felony and have not received a restoration of voting rights. You must be a citizen of the United States and at least 18 years old on or before Election Day. There will be no straight-ticket voting. You must cast a vote for each individual office.

Pre-registered voters

Pre-registered voters must provide an approved form of identification or sign an oath of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a ballot.

Voters who are not pre-registered — such as voters registering to vote on election day — and voters who have changed precincts will also be required to provide proof of residence.

A voter who is unable to show proof of identification may have his or her identity attested to by another voter registered in the precinct who has an approved form of identification.

Acceptable forms of ID are as follows:

• Iowa Driver’s License

• Iowa Non-Operator’s ID

• Military ID

• U.S. Passport

• Tribal ID

• Veteran’s ID

• Voter ID Card

Registering on Election Day

You may register and vote on election day. To do so, you first must go to the correct polling place for your current address on election day.

At the polling place, you must prove both who you are and where you live. The best way to do this is with your valid Iowa driver’s license with your current address printed on it.

Acceptable forms of ID are as follows:

• Iowa non-driver ID card

• Out-of-state driver’s license or non-driver ID card

• U.S. passport

• U.S. military ID

• ID card issued by employer

• Student ID issued by Iowa high school or college

• Tribal ID

Acceptable proof of residence is as follows:

• Residential lease

• Utility bill (including a cell phone bill)

• Bank statement

• Paycheck

• Government check or other government document

Attester:

If you cannot prove who you are and where you live with the documents listed above, a registered voter from your precinct may attest for you. Both you and the attester will be required to sign an oath swearing the statements being made are true.

Falsely attesting or being attested for is registration fraud. It is a class “D” felony and is punishable by a fine of up to $7,500 and up to 5 years in prison.
