A Marshalltown man was transported to the Marshall County Jail earlier this week after Marshalltown police found him to be in possession of semi-automatic 9mm handgun without a weapons permit, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit filed in Marshall County District Court.

Luis Manuel Chavarria Jimenez, 18, was also charged with failure to affix drug tax stamp while being in possession of 69 grams of marijuana, a Class D felony. Additionally, the defendant was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

At his initial appearance, the defendant was appointed a public defender, and released on his own recognizance. The court ordered the defendant to have a substance abuse evaluation within 60 days by Substance Abuse Treatment Unit of Central Iowa.
