Man charged in auto theft

A Marshalltown man who said he wanted to test drive a vehicle earlier this week ended up in Marshall County Jail.

Nickolas Scott Giannetto, 26, was charged with theft first degree, a Class C felony, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit filed in Marshall County District Court. Giannetto was given permission by a local auto sales business to test drive a vehicle but to return in 10 minutes and not go far, according to the complaint. Giannetto drove to Jasper County, crashed and was detained by Jasper County authorities.

Capt. Chris Jones of the Marshalltown Police Department said additional details will be available at a later date.

At his initial appearance Friday, the defendant was appointed a public defender by a Marshall County magistrate. Giannetto was being held on a $5,000 cash/surety bond. His preliminary hearing is Jan. 4.
