Shoplifter resists arrest at local store

Smith

Investigation into a shoplifting incident resulted in a Marshalltown woman resisting arrest in the parking lot of a local retailer. Lindsey Marie Smith, 41, was arrested and taken to Marshall County Jail by Marshalltown police earlier this week, according to two criminal complaints and affidavits filed in Marshall County District Court. Capt. Brian Batterson of the MPD said an officer was called to a local retailer in the 500 block of Iowa Avenue West to investigate an incident whereby store staff witnessed Smith conceal items and go into the bathroom. An employee then heard Smith unpack an item likely to get rid of the alarm sensor. An officer observed her leave the store. The officer then attempted to make contact with Smith, who refused to stop. Other efforts to get her to stop were unsuccessful. The officer found it necessary to hold the defendant against the building until another officer arrived to help handcuff the suspect. A search of her purse revealed a security cameras and two knives that matched the empty packaging found in the bathroom by store staff. Consequently, Smith was charged with third degree theft (enhanced by two prior convictions) and interference with official acts.
