Supervisors approve county floating holiday, truck purchase

The Marshall County Board of Supervisors set out the 2019 floating holiday for county employees Tuesday.

The board voted unanimously to make Dec. 24, 2019 the floating holiday next year. That date was chosen over July 5, 2019. The board discussed the decision prior to voting and got input from county department heads.

Also approved Tuesday was the purchase of a new pickup truck for the county buildings and grounds department. Buildings and Grounds Director Lucas Baedke said the new truck will replace a Dodge Dakota with about 190,000 miles and operational issues.

The purchase approved Tuesday was contingent on Baedke going to the local Dave Wright Dodge dealership to offer them the chance to provide the 2019 Dodge Ram Crew Cab Classic truck.

The dealership will have one week to come up with an offer on the truck. The current offer tentatively approved by the board is for $24,233 and comes from Deery of Ames Commercial.

Board Vice Chairman Dave Thompson insisted that Baedke give the local dealership a chance to make an offer for the truck.

Also approved was the use of the county’s Mobile Band Shell stage equipment and the Marshall County Courthouse Grounds for the Marshalltown Arts Festival July 19-20, 2019.

The board adopted three agreements with the Iowa Department of Transportation for federal funding on three county bridge projects as well. One bridge is located on Jessup Avenue where it crosses Minerva Creek, another for the bridge over the Iowa River overflow on North Center Street and the third for the Ridge Road bridge over Middle Timber Creek.

The next Marshall County Board of Supervisors meeting is set for 9 a.m. Dec. 26 on the second floor of the Great Western Bank Building, 11 N. First Ave. That meeting will be held on a Wednesday morning as the preceding Tuesday falls on Christmas Day.
