Local man sentenced to 11 years in prison

A former Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD) educator was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison Thursday for distributing child pornography.

Glen Arlan Sedlacek, 68, pleaded guilty to the charge in October last year in proceedings at the federal courthouse in Des Moines in exchange for prosecutors dropping two other criminal counts.

U.S. District Judge Stephanie Rose also ordered Sedlacek to make restitution of $6,000 to a female minor identified as Lily. She appeared in the pornographic film “Vicky” viewed by Sedlacek in his Marshalltown home.

Rose also ordered Sedlacek pay $3,000 restitution to another female minor identified as Chelsea. She appeared in a pornographic film “Crazy Girls,” also viewed by Sedlacek.

Rose said the two victims had asked for restitution.

Sedlacek, a former middle school music instructor who retired from MCSD in 2010, was arrested Jan. 11, 2018 by federal agents for possession and distribution of child pornography.

That was proceeded by a search of Sedlacek’s home by federal agents May 9, 2017.

Special Agent Aaron Simon, a Department of Homeland Security cybersecurity expert, testified Thursday Sedlacek had 74,000 files of child pornography and 1,728 videos.

The defendant’s attorney Chad Frese asked Rose to impose a minimum five-year prison sentence and treatment for his client.

However, Rose said giving Sedlacek the minimum would be unfair to the victims.

Rose acknowledged Sedlacek had led a model life — not even getting a traffic ticket — until he entered the world of child pornography.

“I am sorry for what I did,” Sedlacek said in remarks to the court. “I harmed myself, my wife and the victims.”

Rose ordered Sedlacek be taken into custody by U.S. Marshals at the conclusion of the hearing, and will serve his sentence at a federal correctional facility in Rochester, Minn.

The defendant and Frese have 14 days to file an appeal, Rose said.
