Youth Art Show highlights student talent

Visitors to the Fisher Community Center auditorium Saturday afternoon were greeted with a rainbow of colors and a variety of artwork to appreciate.

The day marked the opening of the Youth Art Show, which showcases Marshalltown Schools students’ pieces for a month. An estimated 400 pieces sprawled on the walls, display boards and platforms in the auditorium.

Students were proud of their work and excited for the public to see their art.

“It’s really cool. I don’t normally have people see my artwork, I’ll just share it with my friends or something,” said Marshalltown High School senior Charlie Steggall. “It’s really cool to just know that people around have seen my artwork.”

That artwork included paintings, photos, a wire sculpture and cardboard art.

Fellow MHS senior Zyrus Whitehead said she and Steggall’s artwork had been displayed at the show in previous years. This year’s show will be their last.

“Being here feels kind of nostalgic,” Whitehead said. “I mean, we’re all graduating, we’re all going different places, so it’s fun to be here.”

Parents and families accompanied students at the show. The kids ran to their artwork at a display and often had their picture taken standing by the work.

One pair of siblings said they were happy to have their pieces included in the show.

“I have a piece that we did during one of our art lessons. We were learning about graffiti art and stickering, so I created a character that was this spider-lady inspired by the Roaring ’20s,” said Miller Middle School eighth-grader Sindy Guadiana.

Sindy’s sister Erica Guadiana’s work was displayed nearby. It featured a tree whose branches were designed by tracing the student’s hand and cutting out the outline in her Hoglan Elementary art class.

“I mostly used pink, yellow and red colors,” Erica said.

Another colorful drawing was produced by Lenihan Intermediate School fifth-grader Chloe Alman, who picked the shell that inspired the drawing randomly from a box in art class.

“It’s sea shells. I colored them and I shaded them,” she said with a smile. “I’m really proud of it.”

The show drew hundreds of people of all ages Saturday. The artwork will remain on display at the Fisher Community Center auditorium, 709 S. Center St., during regular business hours until March 28.
