Commercial building damaged by fire

There were no injuries reported at 7:31 p.m. on April 28 when the Marshalltown Fire Department responded with Marshalltown Police Department and UnityPoint EMS to 802 S. Third Ave., on a reported building fire.

Upon arrival, MFD personnel found heavy smoke exiting from the roof vents and eaves of a single story commercial building. Fire crews forced entry into the building and extended hose lines, finding fire in an office area with extension into the lobby.

Crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure. Some walls and ceiling were removed to check for fire extension. Alliant Energy responded and disconnected utility service to the building. The business was closed and unoccupied at the time of the fire. Investigation determined the fire to be accidental in nature with damage estimated at $40,000.
