T-R PHOTO BY MIKE DONAHEY - Police investigate an accident that left a Franklin Elementary student critically injured on Wednesday.

A Franklin Elementary School student is in critical conditional after being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of 13th Street and West Main Street Wednesday afternoon, according to a paramedic who was on scene.

Capt. Brian Batterson of the Marshalltown Police Department said he could not release the student’s name, but did say the student was taken to UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown. A press release at 6:48 p.m. said the victim was flown to Iowa Methodist in Des Moines. The accident occurred shortly after the school day ended.

MPD blocked off the intersection of North 12th Street and North 13th Street to investigate the accident and interview residents.

The MPD’s Crime Scene Technician vehicle was seen leaving the area. The incident remains under investigation.

The school district confirmed the accident had occurred but didn’t have more information at this time.
