One tornado confirmed in Hardin County

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO BY COREY MEINTS/TIMES CITIZEN — Tornadoes continued to pop up in Central Iowa this week, including this one photographed in Hardin County Wednesday.

No one was hurt when at least a dozen tornado sightings in or near Hardin County were reported to the National Weather Service on Wednesday night.

According to a NWS meteorologist only one tornado was actually confirmed. It touched down about half way between Eldora and Iowa Falls near Highway 20 at about 8:30 p.m. The winds tore the roof off of a barn structure, according to reports.

The only other confirmed tornado in Iowa touched down near Montezuma. One injury was reported during that event, which reportedly damaged power lines and an out building.

A total count of sightings across the state are still being calculated.

“The strength of the tornadoes hasn’t been classified yet, but they were all certainly on the weak end of the spectrum,” the NWS meteorologist said. “We’ll continue to gather information as it comes in from sheriff departments, social media, that kind of thing.”

Hardin County Sheriff Dave McDaniel said that as of Thursday morning his office had no reports of injuries. He said they did receive reports of damage Wednesday evening.

“There was a report of damage last night, but we were unable to find any this morning,” he said.
