Local attorney to fill vacancy on Planning and Zoning Commission

Marshalltown’s Planning and Zoning Commission will welcome a new member at its June 13 meeting.

Local attorney Laura Eilers was appointed to the commission by Mayor Joel Greer last month and unanimously approved by the Marshalltown city council at its May 28 regular meeting.

“Because Sharon Soorholtz Greer was leaving the commission, the city wanted to keep a diverse background with a female attorney,” Eilers said.

She is with Peglow, O’Hare & See PLC.

Sharon Greer of Cartwright, Druker and Ryden, resigned after being appointed as an Iowa Court of Appeals judge by Gov. Kim Reynolds in April.

The council also unanimously ratified the re-appointments of veteran member and chairperson Jon Boston and member Angela Lins-Eich a the May 28 meeting. Planning and Zoning Commission board members are appointed volunteers working closely with Housing and Community Development Director Michelle Spohnheimer and staff.

Spohnheimer said she is looking forward to working with Eilers.

The Planning and Zoning Commission recommends boundaries of various town districts, and applies appropriate regulations and restrictions as necessary, according to the city’s website. In addition, the commission makes recommendations for amendments, supplements, changes and modifications of district regulations, restrictions and boundaries.

Commission members are appointed to five-year terms. Other members are local residents Keith Bloomquist, Matthew Brodin, Aimee Deimerly-Snyder and Stephen Valbracht. Meetings are held the Thursday following the first council meeting of the month.

Eilers is not a stranger to helping set agency policy and giving staff direction. She has also served as a member of the Marshalltown Water Works board of trustees in a volunteer capacity since 2012.

“I am looking forward to helping the city in another capacity,” she said.
