Marshalltown Schools approve $380K in improvement projects

T-R PHOTO BY ADAM SODDERS — Painting the Miller Middle School Auditorium entrance is just one of dozens of summer projects planned by the Marshalltown Schools buildings and grounds department.

From new playground turf to summer projects to another Roundhouse Phase II change order, the Marshalltown School Board had plenty of buildings and grounds items to address at Monday’s meeting.

At the center of all those items was district Buildings and Grounds Director Chuck Springer. The board members approved all of the items he brought before them.

Safe ground to play on

District officials and children in the northeastern Marshalltown neighborhood are anticipating the installation of a new playground area at Woodbury Elementary School, and that playground will include new, safe turf.

“It is a district practice that & we are putting rubberized surface under the playgrounds,” Springer said. “The last surface we put in was a poured-in-place rubber surface that we put in over at Anson Elementary, and the children really like it.”

He said that kind of surface is also more economical than other turf material options.

The bid approved for the rubberized turf came in at $30,576 from Kansas-based Taylormade Company. That money will come from district Public Education and Recreation Levy (PERL) funds while the rest of the playground will be paid for with a $50,000 nationally-competitive grant from the nonprofit KaBOOM! organization.

“Our expectation with that will be for that to be poured, weather permitting, immediately following the build on Friday the 19th of July,” said district Superintendent Theron Schutte.

Phase II change order

Another change order for the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse Phase II project came before the board for approval at Monday’s meeting. The board approved the $31,516 change order and more were possibly on the horizon.

“We have four additional that we’re negotiating on,” Springer said.

Schutte said the other possible change orders being discussed among district officials, Ball Team LLC and FEH Design staff will be brought before the board finance and facilities committees before the full board makes a decision on approval.

“We have been through many meetings, many negotiations with the Ball Team, with FEH and the district,” Springer said of the change order approved Monday.

Changes approved included work on a loading dock stair wall, adding an exit sign, adding sealant, adding fire protection to beams and numerous others additions. Monday’s approved change order follows $46,000 worth of previous such change orders.

Including the most recent change order, the total sum for the Phase II project comes to $6,763,522. The total project is budgeted at about $6.7 million plus $100,000 in contingency funds.

Phase II, which includes a new gymnasium and wrestling room, reached substantial completion earlier this year.

Summer projects

Springer also presented the official 2019 summer projects list for his department. The board also gave their approval of that work, estimated at a total of $385,000.

“This is after discussion with the principals, discussion with the custodial staff, the maintenance staff, going through our work order system and taking a look at the issues that have come up throughout the course of the school year and things that are on our radar that we would like to get taken care of over the summer,” Springer said.

He said the listed projects do not include anything that would be paid for from PERL or Secure and Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) levy funds.
