Marshalltown Schools names new HR Director

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO – Nora Ryan is set to take over as Marshalltown Schools human resources director July 1.

Nora Ryan will be the new Marshalltown Schools human resources director after current director Anthony Spurgetis announced his resignation earlier this month.

Ryan currently works as Inclusion Services Coordinator for Iowa State University’s Equal Opportunity Office, per a district statement. Her appointment was approved by the Marshalltown School Board Monday evening.

“She’s fluent in Spanish and also working on becoming fluent in sign language,” said Superintendent Theron Schutte.

He said he and other school officials are excited to add Ryan to the team.

Ryan holds a bachelors degree and masters in public administration degree from Iowa State, as well as a doctorate in public administration and public policy from George Washington University.

She has worked as a teacher and in human resources at previous jobs. She also worked as a statistician fellow under former President Barack Obama’s administration from 2015 to 2016, according to the statement.

After announcing his resignation at the June 3 board meeting, Spurgetis said he is returning to the Des Moines metro area to continue his work in human resources. He said he accepted the human resources director position at Johnston Community School District.

Spurgetis arrived at the district among a slew of new administrators, including Superintendent Theron Schutte, Director of Instruction Lisa Stevenson and several others. Prior to coming to Marshalltown, Spurgetis worked for Des Moines Public Schools and Cedar Rapids Community School District.

His resignation will be effective June 30. Ryan will take up the position effective July 1.
