Missing Marshalltown woman found dead

A Marshalltown woman who had been missing since Friday was found dead in the Iowa River Monday morning.

Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper said Jazmin Reyes Raya, 18, was found after days of searching and no foul play is suspected. This is still an active investigation and all possible scenarios will be thoroughly investigated, he said.

Her family said she was autistic and had other medical issues with seizures. She was last seen Friday evening near Fifth and Hughes Streets, which is not far from the river.

The Marshalltown Community School District release the following statement:

“We are heartbroken to hear of the devastating news of the passing of former Marshalltown student Jazmin Reyes Raya. She will be dearly missed. School district counselors and other staff have been in touch with the family and will continue to offer support in their time of need.”

The Marshalltown Police Department has been assisted in this investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Marshalltown Fire Department, Marshall County 911, Marshall County Crime Stoppers, Marshall County Emergency Management, Star 1 Search & Rescue, Story County Emergency Management and private search and rescue dog team handlers.

“The police department sincerely appreciates the innumerable hours put in by all of these partners during the search for Jazmin,” the police said in a statement. “These agencies all provided exceptionally professional service under very difficult conditions.”
