Area youth recognized in writing challenge

The universal story writing challenge was part of the book bingo for summer readers as part of Universe of Stories 2019 summer reading program at the Marshalltown Public Library. This free program offers the opportunity for all ages of youth to read, visit the library and complete other learning challenges to earn points to trade for prizes.

Many students submitted entries for this challenge, where participants were asked to write out their own experience of the July 2018 tornado, the impact they thought it had on the community or what “Marshalltown Strong” means to them. All summer readers who submitted an entry received credit on their book bingo; with submission into a Times-Republican contest optional. The Times-Republican selected four young writers, Aubrie Kynaston, Claire Wilke, Ella Reynolds and Ellie Kendall as winners of the contest. Each received a special prize from the T-R.
