Iowa River Brewing Company to host presidential candidate Michael Bennet

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., speaks at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa. If there’s a place where Democrat Michael Bennet’s low-key approach to the presidential contest would resonate, it would seem to be Iowa. But even here, the Colorado senator is running into the realities of modern campaigning, where the candidate with the best zinger or a viral tweet often gets top billing. He insists he won’t change. Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bennet will hold a community conversation event at noon on Saturday at the Iowa River Brewing Company, 107 N. First St.

Bennet, who is a lawyer and businessman, has served as a senator from Colorado since 2009. He also spent years working as superintendent of the Denver Public Schools. He worked as a managing partner for the Anschutz Investment Company, which bought up debt of failing companies and restructured them.

On the campaign trail, Bennet shares a personal family story related to the topic of immigration. His mother Susanne Klejman and her parents John and Halina were Polish Jews who survived the Holocaust. They were separated after the Nazi invasion and reunited after World War II.

Bennet calls for a lifetime lobbying ban for members of Congress and wants a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. If elected president, he would implement a health care policy called Medicare-X, a public option plan that builds on the Affordable Care Act. His pledge by 2028 is to make sure “every child born in this country, regardless of circumstance, will be at the center of a community that offers them a real chance to flourish personally and prosper financially” according to his campaign website. This would include early childhood proficiency for reading and math. The candidate would also implement a climate change plan.

Iowa River Brewing Company has hosted a slew of politicians in recent months including:

• Montana Gov. Steve Bullock
