A local man, Mathew Andrew McCanna, was charged with second offense domestic abuse assault.

He was arrested by Marshalltown police and taken to Marshall County Jail Monday.

McCanna, 31, was charged after an investigation by MPD confirmed he assaulted the victim. Domestic abuse-second offense is an aggravated misdemeanor.

His first conviction for domestic abuse assault was in Marshall County.

At his initial appearance also Monday, a magistrate ordered him held on $2,000 cash or surety bond. Additionally, the magistrate appointed him a public defender, and also placed a no contact order against him, meaning he can not contact the victim.

His preliminary hearing is Sept. 19.
