Started in 2015, the Iowa Veterans Home’s annual Wiener Dog Races have delighted residents, staff and the public ever since. This year’s race will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 13.

“It started from an idea from a former employee who owned a dachshund. I grew up with a couple of dachshunds myself and there were numerous other IVH staff who owned dachshunds, so it began,” Recreation Supervisor Emily Hall said. “Residents, staff and visitors enjoy it so much that we continue to hold the event yearly.”

The event will be set up in the IVH courtyard between the Sheeler and Dack buildings. Owners and participants are required to check in prior to the start time. Please bring copies of the dogs’ vaccination records.

Races will consist of a variety of heats: oldest, youngest, female, male, best over all and biggest loser.

“Staff are available to assist at the start and end of the race. Race lanes are enclosed and blocked at the end so no one can run away,” Hall said. “In the event that it rains, we will have a meet and greet with the dogs inside.”

The event is free and open to the public.

“We had about a dozen dogs participate in last year’s race,” Commandant Timon Oujiri said. “It’s a highlight for our residents and is well-attended.”
