Celebrating dogs and connecting pet owners with resources in the Marshalltown area are the goals of Bark in the Park.

The annual event, hosted by the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Riverview Park, 402 Woodland St.

ARL executive director Shelly Nodland said a variety of activities are planned to appeal to all, and people are encouraged to bring man’s best friend along.

The event will kick off with a 5K walk/run, beginning at 10 a.m. on the trail by the tennis courts. Dogs are not necessary to participate, but they are encouraged. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with a $20 registration fee. People can also register ahead of time at the ARL, 1921 Taylor Ave.

Back by popular demand is the indoor vendor fair in Reunion Hall. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“They will have jewelry, arts and crafts and a bake sale for two-legged and four-legged attendees,” Nodland said.

A pet fair outside of Reunion Hall will feature local Happy Tails business doing nail trimming and ear cleaning at a reduced price and VCA Animal Hospital – The Vet will doing microchips at a reduced cost, Nodland said. Meanwhile, Hometown Veterinarian will introduce attendees to iVet food line and Hunting The Moon will be taking caricature or classic photos of pets, humans or both.

She said the event is a fundraiser but it is also for community outreach.

“We get so many animals surrendered to us because people aren’t educated about micro-chipping, tags and behavior issues,” Nodland said. “Every dog should have a tag.”

Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the Marshall County Pork Producers will sell lunch items with funds raised will go toward general ARL expenses.

“I am hoping for nice weather and a great turnout,” Nodland said. “This is a very fun event important for our community.”
