Man arrested for attempted murder after Tuesday standoff

Joseph Wade Bown, 38, of Marshalltown was arrested by Marshalltown police Tuesday on a charge of attempted murder, according to Chief of Police Mike Tupper.

He was arrested after a 4.5-hour standoff with a Marshalltown SWAT team which ended at 10:15 p.m.

“We were told Bown was in a specific vehicle and where to find him,” Tupper said. “We conducted a traffic stop and took him into custody.”

Bown also faces charges of control of a weapon by a felon and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. All are felonies.

Earlier in the day, at 12:19 a.m., Bown shot a man in the chest at a Marshalltown residence in the 700 block of North Fourth Avenue.

Police apprehended Bown later. The victim was taken to the UnityPoint Emergency Room and then transported to a Des Moines hospital where he is in stable condition.

Detectives learned evidence related to the shooting was located at 814 N. Fifth Ave. and were granted a search warrant. The SWAT Team served the warrant and arrested Robert Five Jr., 44, on an outstanding warrant for violation of parole. Fite was also charged with accessory after the fact for his role in the shooting investigation.

Bown is being held in Marshall County Jail on a $200,000 cash-only bond.

An accomplice, Robert Louis Fite Jr. was charged with a parole violation and accessory after the fact.

He is being held in jail without bond.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
