Well-known Marshalltown physician Milt VanGundy is retiring after 45 years.

His last day as medical director of the Wound Healing Center is Dec. 4.

The public is invited to a reception for VanGundy from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 3, in the front atrium of the local UnityPoint Health Medical Park at 55 Central Iowa Drive.

VanGundy has been a key member and leader of the medical community for more than two generations.

He started in family practice in 1974 and moved to the emergency department where he stayed for more than a decade before beginning the Wound Healing Center.

Along the way, VanGundy served as the president of the Iowa Academy of Family Practice for a year, mentored numerous student doctors from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and helped pioneer the technique of intubating pediatric patients.

He also provided the model for after-hours care long before urgent care existed. VanGundy gave up some of his free time to staff night hours for Lennox Manufacturing and Fisher Controls employees.

Under his direction, the Wound Healing Center has become an award-winning facility. Most recently, in 2016, the clinic received the Center of Distinction Award from Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services.

Healogics recognized the Wound Healing Center again in 2018 with the President’s Circle award due to its patient satisfaction rates.

In conjunction with the retirement, VanGundy’s position in the Wound Healing Center will be filled by Dr. J. Michael McCune of Marhalltown.

McCune is a general surgeon in the UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown Multi-Specialty Clinic. He has been practicing general surgery since 1985 and with UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown for 22 years.

McCune is certified by the American Board of Surgery and The American College of Surgeons. He will lead a team that includes Kelli Buresh, ARNP, WOCN; Dr. Sean McMurray, DPM; Tia Bacon, Nurse Supervisor; and Warren Freeman, Program Director.

After McCune’s transition, residents will still have two general surgeons in the community, located at the local McFarland Clinic.
