Woman arrested on felony forgery charges
Crystal Marie Lennie, 30, of Grinnell, was arrested by Marshalltown police Tuesday on three felony counts of forgery, nine counts of identity theft under $1,500 and one count of third degree theft charges.
Lennie forged signatures of victims and then cashed checks less than $1,500 in exchange for goods or services in October 2019 at a number of Marshalltown and Central Iowa businesses.
Capt. Brian Batterson of the MPD said Lennie was not taken to jail because the offenses were reported last year and it was a long-term investigation.
Also, Lennie was not considered a threat.
Lennie did sign a summons promising to appear in court Friday.
On Friday, a magistrate judge appointed Lennie a public defender and set a preliminary hearing for Feb. 20.
Forgery in Lennie’s case is a Class D felony which is punishable by a maximum prison term not to exceed five years which may be deterred or suspended unless forcible felony. A fine of at least $750 but not more than $7,500 may be imposed.
Identity theft less than $1,500 is an aggravated misdemeanor, which is punishable by a maximum prison term not to exceed two years. The time could also be served in jail.
The offense also carries a mandatory fine of at least $500 but not more than $5,000.
