St. Patrick’s Day is two weeks away, and the American Legion and Auxiliary Post 46 will provide Marshalltown residents with a fun way to celebrate.

Though Marshalltown may not have the same raucous parades one can find in Chicago, New Orleans and New York, those in the area can enjoy food, games and prizes with the American Legion’s card party.

The American Legion and Auxiliary Post 46 will be hosting the 14th annual St. Patrick’s Day Card Party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on March 16. It will take place at the American Legion #46 Golf Course and Lounge, 1301 S. 6th St. The party will serve as a fundraiser for the organization.

According to Barb Blake, chairperson of the event, it is an important fundraiser for the American Legion.

“The fundraiser is to promote veterans’ projects and activities and support other auxiliary activities,” she said.

The party helps support bingo at the Iowa Veterans Home and the Marshalltown Community College American Legion scholarship.

The card party is a popular event, said Tonya Warnell, American Legion auxiliary member. “We were just about at standing room only last year.”

The atmosphere is relaxed, with attendees having the choice of what games they play.

“You can bring your group in and play cards, whatever game you want,” Warnell said.

Attendees can look forward to refreshments, plenty of food, door prizes and a drawing.

Warnell said that everyone usually gets a door prize, which are provided by businesses around town.

Tickets are $10 each and can be bought from Barb Blake, Tonya Warnell, Linda Fuller, Mary Alice Groff, Amy McCready or Toshia Nusbaum. Though they prefer to have tickets bought in advance, this can also be done at the door.
