Marshalltown spreads love virtually

The community of Marshalltown is proving once again that members can come together during times of crisis.

Twenty-five people participated in a special project created by Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce Director of Tourism Andrew Potter.

The project is being used to spread positivity during the COVID-19 pandemic through the “Spreading Love” video.

“I was just looking for a way to connect our community during this time of isolation,” Potter said.

He said he wanted to spread some hope during this stressful time.

The video was released on Sunday and can be watched on the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce Tourism Facebook page or Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce YouTube channel.

There were around 25 participants, including Mayor Joel Greer, Police Chief Michael Tupper and Superintendent Theron Schutte.

Potter said the video has had a great response.

“It’s just awesome to see how many people are sharing it,” he said.

The video has already racked up approximately 2,000 views on Facebook and YouTube combined.

Potter said the response has been exactly what he hoped for.

“I accomplished what I set out to do,” he said.

Deb Moore, ELL teacher at Marshalltown Community School District Lenihan Intermediate School, recorded a clip with her husband Nick Beard and daughter to include in the video.

She said she has known Potter for many years and appreciates the positivity the video is sharing.

“I knew Andrew Potter … and what positive messages he sent out,” Moore said.

COVID-19 has created anxiety and despair in many, but Marshalltown residents continue to support each other.

“My husband and I are both educators and are just trying to set good examples and stay positive,” Moore said.
