Community theatre play canceled

With nonessential workers asked to stay home and gatherings unadvisable, many events have been canceled for the coming months. Among these is the Marshalltown Community Theatre production of “Pure as the Driven Snow” set to premiere April 25. The theatre hopes to reschedule but is unable to set a date because of the uncertainty of the situation.

“Pure as the Driven Snow” is a comedy by Paul Loomis centering on Purity Dean, a sweet working girl. She is constantly plagued by the advances of Mortimer Frothingham, the villain of the play. The melodrama will draw audiences in and keep them laughing.

Pete Grady, director of the production, is excited for when they will be able to share the play with the community.

“It’s really one of the best casts I’ve ever worked with,” he said.

Grady said rehearsals were going well, and he believes people will love the play.

“It was top-notch. These are really good people and they all really enjoyed the show,” he said.

Grady said cast members enjoyed watching their cast mates act and laughed while watching the scenes, which is a sign the show is good.

While he felt bad the play will not be put on this spring, he recognizes that everyone is making sacrifices right now.

“There are a lot more important things that have happened as a result of the coronavirus,” Grady said.

He wanted to let people know the Marshalltown Community Theatre will put on “Shrek the Musical” this summer, which he hopes will draw in many residents. Auditions are set for May 11, dependent on the state of the pandemic at the time, and the production organizer is Nathan Bloomquist.

Grady said he hopes to bring “Pure as the Driven Snow” to Marshalltown in the fall so it will not interfere with “Shrek the Musical.”
