Dave’s prepares to reopen

T-R photo by Thomas Nelson Julie Stanley paints a wall in Dave’s courtyard. When they reopen, the area will be called Sally’s Back Alley Bar and Grill.

After closing because of the COVID-19 pandemic Dave’s is getting ready to reopen soon.

A grand reopening is planned for August to showcase the bar’s new amenities including Sally’s Back Alley Bar and Grill in the courtyard of the building.

Karaoke, bands and lunch will be available for patrons to enjoy.

“We’ll offer a full kitchen,” said Denny Gray, owner.

Dave’s has been open for about a year and half since the 2018 tornado forced them to close once. During the pandemic they decided to remodel the building, but the coronavirus has slowed reopening plans.

The back of Dave’s Bar on Main Street in Marshalltown is being converted into Sally’s.

“We’re trying to finish this up,” Gray said. “I don’t want anyone to get sick.”

Dave’s has been around Marshalltown for a while, but the building it was located in was badly damaged by the tornado.

“We had five other places in here,” Gray said. “We’ve redone it and will open back up.”

They are waiting on a grill for the big reopening and once it comes in Gray said they will be open for lunch.

Dave’s is another example of a business overcoming both COVID-19 and tornado destruction in Marshalltown.

Dave’s Bar on Main Street is undergoing remodeling and will reopen later this summer.

The building is located at 207 E. Main St. and has been around since 1910. Dave’s has been around since 2012.

“It’s been quite a road,” Gray said.
