JCPenney will close permanently Marshalltown

Following a review of their business, leaders of JCPenney decided on Thursday to close 154 stores this summer, which includes the location in Marshalltown.

The company is also closing the location in Carroll.

The closings will occur this summer and sales will begin June 12.

“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” said Jill Soltau, JCPenney chief executive officer.

The chain filed for bankruptcy on May 15 with 860 stores and 90,000 employees.

JCPenney reopened almost 500 locations following the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
