Restaurants to check out in Central Iowa

As Iowa and the rest of the country slowly begins to reopen businesses, Iowans need some direction when it comes to finding the best places to eat across central Iowa. With that in mind, the T-R intern, Matt Belinson, picked some options based on social media response to get some good grub in each county in Central Iowa.

Here are some restaurants Belinson picked to check out in each county in central Iowa.

Marshall County

Smokin’ G’s

What began as a local catering company evolved into one of Marshalltown’s best restaurants in 2014 when Smokin’ G’s opened its doors. Smokin’ G’s offers six choices of half-pound burgers, prime rib, beef brisket sandwich and much more. In the mood for specials? Smokin’ G’s offers plenty of daily specials on wings, philly sandwiches, brisket and ribs.

Jasper County

Moo’s BBQ

Since 2014, Moo’s BBQ has served jasper County some of the finest smoked meats in all of Iowa. From its award-winning pulled pork, sammiches, ribs and burgers, Moo’s BBQ has everything a BBQ lover would want. Some of the most popular items on the menu don’t shy away from giving customers all the smoked meats they can get. “The Iowan Burger” is a 1-pound beef patty covered in pulled pork, bacon and cheese. “The Barnyard Sammich” has it all, with pulled pork, brisket, chicken and bacon served up on a flatbread or bun. When it comes to true BBQ, Moo’s offers some of the best ribs in the state, with a half rack and a side costing $13.95 and a full rack and two sides going for $23.95.

Great Plains Sauce and Dough Company

Since 1979, Great Plains Sauce and Dough Company has been serving the Ames and Story County community with its renowned pizza. With six different styles of making its pizza, Great Plains offers up plenty of options to make its pizza taste the best no matter your preference of toppings and pizza style. The pizza at Great Plains comes in a 10-inch, 12-inch and 14-inch size, with 16 toppings to choose from, along with four house-made special pizzas. Great Plains prides itself on fresh ingredients and simple yet enjoyable pizza for everyone, which makes it a local favorite in the college town of Ames, but all across Story County.

Hardin County

Three Days Grille and Saloon

There is a pretty clear reason why Three Days Grille and Saloon gets its name, with the restaurant only being open from Thursday through Saturday in the evening. Despite the shortened hours, that hasn’t stopped Hardin County residents from enjoying this local spot and all of its popular burger and sandwich basket options. From the Sticky Finger Burger with a beef patty, bacon, cheese and peanut butter, to its popular 75-cent wings, Three Days Grille and Saloon has what Iowans want with its big portions and old favorites.

Grundy County

That Place Restaurant

No we didn’t forget the name of this restaurant, and neither will you. That Place is home to classic Iowa comfort food, with country dinners, burgers, steaks and more served in this classic diner, That Place is a name you’ll remember. The prime rib and ribeye are some of the most popular options that will make you want to come back to That Place.

Sunrise Cafe
