The number of new COVID-19 cases continues to spike as the pandemic ravages the country.

There were 101 new cases of COVID-19 and one more death attributed to the virus in Marshall County, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 website. This week’s totals bring the county to 1,235 cases since March.

There are 251 active COVID-19 cases in Marshall County with a 49.1 percent increase of active COVID-19 cases in Marshall County, compared to last week.

Overall, there are 84 more active cases than last week.

This week saw an increase of 8.9 percent; 1,134 cases confirmed on July 16 to 1,235 on Thursday. There were 3,602 new cases reported in Iowa in that week.

In Marshall County, 986 people have recovered from COVID-19 and 28,929 have recovered throughout the state.

Marshall County has the tenth highest number of COVID-19 confirmed cases. In front are Polk with 8,771; Woodbury, 3,510; Black Hawk, 2,767; Buena Vista, 1,767; Linn, 1,699; Johnson, 1,687; Dallas, 1,615; Scott, 1,389; and Dubuque, with 1,287.

At least 818 Iowans have died from COVID-19 and 21 of those deaths were residents of Marshall County.

As of Thursday, Iowa had a 5.6 percent increase in cases of people recovering from COVID-19 and a 1.9 percent increase of recoveries from COVID-19 in Marshall County.

According to the IDPH data, 67 percent of the reported cases of COVID-19 across the state have been from Caucasians; 5 percent, Asian; 8 percent, African American; 1 percent, Native American; 1 percent, native Hawaiian; and 20 percent, Latino.

Only slightly more men than women have been infected with 50 percent of the cases being male and 49 percent, female.

People between the ages of 18 and 40 made up the majority of confirmed cases with 48 percent; people between the ages of 41 and 60, 30 percent; people between the ages 61 and 80, 12 percent; people older than 81, 4 percent; and 6 percent have been younger than 18.

Last week ended with 37,032 confirmed cases and this week comes to a close with 40,634 cases.
