COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Marshall County

Marshall County saw a large increase of active COVID-19 cases this week — 66 — and a slower recovery rate. Only 14 more people recovered from COVID-19 in the last week, increasing from 953 to 967.

There are 174 active cases in Marshall County, which is a 49 percent increase compared to last week when 41 positive cases were confirmed. Throughout the state, 27,383 people have recovered.

As of Thursday, Iowa had a 4 percent increase in cases of people recovering from COVID-19 and a 1.6 percent increase of recoveries from COVID-19 in Marshall County.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 website Marshall County has 1,141 since March.

The IDPH website provides demographics of people who tested positive for COVID-19. In Marshall County, the highest percentage of cases — 46 — have struck the age group of 18-40; 35 percent, 41-60; 12 percent, 61-80; 4 percent, 17 and younger; and 4 percent, 80 and older.

Across the state, people between the ages of 18 and 40 also made up the majority of confirmed cases with 49 percent; 41 and 60, 30 percent; 61 and 80, 12 percent; people older than 81, 4 percent; and 6 percent have been younger than 18.

In Iowa, 65 percent of the reported cases of COVID-19 have been Caucasian; 21 percent, Latino; 8 percent, African American; 6 percent, Asian; 1 percent, Native American; and 1 percent, native Hawaiian.

Only slightly more men than women have been infected with 50 percent of the cases being male and 48 percent, female.

Last week ended with 33,246 confirmed cases and this week comes to a close with 37,134 cases. There were 3,888 new cases reported in Iowa.

Marshall County has the ninth highest number of COVID-19 confirmed cases. In front are Polk with 7,952, an increase of 993 in one week; Woodbury, 3,401, increase of 120; Black Hawk, 2,616, an increase of 222; Buena Vista, 1,742, an increase of 17; Johnson, 1,566, an increase of 192; Linn, 1,485, an increase of 152; Dallas, 1,475, an increase of 145; and Scott with 1,203. Last week, Scott County had a lower number of cases than Marshall.

At least 778 Iowans have died from COVID-19 and 20 of those deaths were residents of Marshall County.
