North Center Street paving poured
PHOTO BY GARRY BRANDENBURG — A big step forward regarding the entire North Center Street bridges and roadway project improvement took place on July 22. The contractor’s huge slip form concrete paving machine pulls a supply of thick concrete into its auger system and distributes the material into an even and precise eight inch thick by 22 foot wide layer of future roadway. Paving is taking place on the segment of roadway between the Iowa River bridge and the other previously completed bridge located just south of the entrance to Marshalltown’s water works facility. The Iowa River bridge deck was poured on June 3.
North Center Street improvements continue with paving of the roadway between the Iowa River bridge and the next overflow bridge near the Waterworks plant. This portion of the roadway is 1,200 feet long.
Paving is 22 feet wide by 8 inches thick. Approximately 60 concrete trucks at 10 tons per load will be required to place 600 cubic yards of mix on the prepared roadbed. The process on Wednesday took about seven hours to complete.
Construction projects are always more complicated than how it may appear to the public. Preparation and engineering work prior to the actual placing of paving material is essential. The process including removal of old asphalt paving, grading the road bed and applying new base rock to the proper elevation.
While this new paving has to cure before it can accept any loads, a lot more work is on-going at the southeast end of the new river bridge. The plans call for a 31 foot wide approach to blend into the existing North Center Street road new Bryngelson’s Construction Company. However, much work remains before any traffic flow can be accepted.
In fact, North Center Street and the new river bridge will not be open to the general public for a long time. A large water main remains to be set on the north beams adjacent to the bridge. Crews are awaiting special pipe support brackets for that. Lots of critical connections to underground infrastructure for water and sewer lines must be properly addressed before a new approach roadway to the river bridge can be installed.
Once all this work is finished, access for Waterworks employees will be switched from their present route past KDAO radio station to a south access over the new river bridge. Public access to this segment will remain closed.
The next phases for North Center Street involve the destruction of two additional overflow bridges, one of which has the small Asher Creek low head dam nearby. Demolition is slated to begin this fall for at least one or maybe both bridges. When those bridges are completed and new decks poured, old connecting roadway asphalt will be excavated, grading accomplished and new roadway poured most likely in 2021. By the summer of 2021, North Center Street road will be reopened for public travel.
There will be no weight restrictions on any of the new bridges after they are placed in service.
