School district to host FAQ session Wednesday

Parents and guardians will have an opportunity to ask questions about the Return to Learn plan on Wednesday.

The Marshalltown Community School District will host a digital FAQ session for parents and guardians of MCSD students at 6 p.m.

Communications Director Adam Sodders said the session will include Superintendent Theron Schutte, Director of Instruction Lisa Stevenson, Human Resources Director Nora Ryan, Director of Special Services Matt Cretsinger, Business Director Paulette Newbold and himself. School building principals will also participate in the session. Sodders said some of the principals who will be present include Jacque Wyant, Marshalltown High School; Kyle Young, Lenihan; Amy Williams, Hoglan; and Kristyn Kell or Dave Glenn, Miller Middle School.

“We know people have a lot of questions,” Sodders said. “This is a very uncertain time and the school district is a huge part of the lives of thousands of families. They want to know what school will look like in the fall, and they want answers. We are doing our best to communicate. This is a way for us to do that and meet them where they are at.”

Sodders said the digital event will begin with an introduction of everyone participating and then the staff members can begin answering the questions. He said there will be a living document that people can submit their questions on.

“We will be answering questions as they come in,” Sodders said.

The session will last 90 minutes. At the end, all of the unanswered questions will be gathered and answered. Sodders said a document with the answers will be released.

“It will be a living document that will be continuously updated because COVID-19 is very fluid,” he said. “The document will be set up so that it is legible and easy for families to follow.”

The FAQ session was Schutte’s idea, Sodders said.

“He and the leadership team noticed a lot of people have a lot of questions,” he said. “We want to keep families as informed as we possibly can. We want everyone who has questions to ask them, but because of the nature of this pandemic, we might not have answers to every single question. We will do our best to answer all of the questions we can.”

Sodders said district staff have been proud of and amazed by the response of Marshalltown residents to the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents made time to register their children for school, even while holding onto questions of what the school year will look like.

“We are doing the best job possible of educating the children,” Sodders said.

A link to the FAQ event will be sent to parents and guardians on Tuesday.
