Summer concert series begins with bang
After months of living in a pandemic, Marshalltown residents gathered for the beginning of the Summer Concert Series. The free performance, provided by Grand Marshall, was held on Sunday at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds.
Rain earlier in the day gave way to a cool afternoon which the many attendees enjoyed from lawn chairs.
Blake Roseland, drummer and vocalist for Grand Marshall, said band members enjoyed performing after a brief hiatus.
“It was great. We haven’t played since March,” he said.
Other members of the band include Doug Norton on vocals and bass, Trevor Parrish on vocals and guitar, Bob Roseland on keyboard and Trevor Long on vocals and guitar.
The band played a variety of covers, including classic rock, pop hits and country songs. Audience members enjoyed the music — many singing and dancing along.
Roseland said it is important to continue performing during this time.
“People need live music right now,” he said.
Grand Marshall has been together for three years, though its origins go back much further.
The original Grand Marshall formed in 1983 and lasted for around a decade. Bob Roseland is an original member.
Central Iowa Fair manager Shannon Espenscheid said she was happy with how the event went.
“I think it was a nice turn-out,” she said.
Espenscheid said people enjoyed themselves.
Next Sunday, Richie Lee and the Fabulous Fifties will perform from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Outside food and beverages are prohibited. There will be a food truck and an alcoholic beverage tent onsite.
