Beginning of school delayed

The beginning day of school for Marshalltown Community School District has been delayed to Sept. 8.

In a statement released Friday, Superintendent Theron Schutte said all 10 school sites received some damage from the derecho which tore through Marshall County on Monday.

However, the loss of power and internet five days following the storm is an issue. While power has been restored to Hoglan Elementary and Miller Middle School, other locations are still affected. The Marshalltown High School only has partial power.

“With reportedly only 25 percent of our community having power or internet at this time, the delaying of the school start date has become necessary and inevitable,” Schutte wrote.

He hopes that most, if not all, of the community will have electricity and internet by Sept. 8.

The district will likely purchase and distribute more hotspots to help provide families with internet access.

“The district is very concerned about the general welfare of our students and their families during this traumatic time,” Schutte wrote. “Please feel free to reach out to us if we can provide any assistance to your family during this time of recovery. We will do our best to connect you with available resources within our great community if we are unable to directly assist.”
