Man charged with throwing missile at neighbor’s cat

Backoff

Having someone charged with throwing missiles is not an every day occurrence in Marshalltown.

However, Edward Backoff, 73, was charged with that plus animal abuse on Friday.

Marshalltown Police Department Capt. Brian Batterson said Backoff was firing a BB gun at a neighbor’s cat.

“Throwing missiles is a simple misdemeanor,” he said. “The animal abuse is an aggravated misdemeanor.

Marshalltown city ordinance 131.005 prohibits propelling, driving or operating any missile, bomb, projectile or rocket within city limits. This applies, Batterson said, to BB guns, pellet guns, wrist rockets, archery and paintball.

Batterson said the ordinance has been in place for more than 30 years and is to prevent injury and damage to property.

The only area where these items can be discharged is at an approved range, such as underneath the Center Street viaduct.
