City approves grant to Fareway for new store

CONTRIBUTED GRAPHIC The Marshalltown City Council took another step in helping bring a new Fareway grocery store to town. In August, the company asked the city for help in paying for reconstruction of a sidewalk, of the driveway access and for the city to waive permit fees.

Fareway will receive a $65,000 grant from Marshalltown.

The Marshalltown City Council approved a grant of $65,000 to Fareway to build a new store nearby the site of the old store.

Fareway recently submitted plans to demolish its existing site and build a new store on the existing property at 102 W. Anson St.

The new store will have new flooring, shelving, refrigerator units and a fresh look.

The plan has been in the making for almost two years. Fareway is seeking financial assistance from the city during the process.

In a memo submitted to the Marshalltown City Council, City Administrator Jessica Kinser, wrote, “The current site is located in an urban revitalization area, which would provide for a 100 percent tax abatement for three years. However, their plan to keep the existing store will result in not realizing a full 100 percent abatement on new improvements.”

Fareway has requested grants from the city for rebuilding a new sidewalk along Anson Street, reconstruction of the driveway access approaches in the right-of-way and for the city to waive permit fees.

The grant was part of the council’s consent agenda and was passed without discussion.

There are four phases of the project to build the new Fareway:

• Phase 1 — utility connections which has begun

• Phase two — construction while the current store is open

• Phase three — demolition of the old store

• Phase four — repaving the location of the current facility. The goal is to have the repaving complete by October 2021.
