Iowa reports 47 more virus deaths

Iowa reported 47 deaths from the coronavirus on Wednesday, the highest single-day death toll and a reflection of the increasing number of people seriously ill with the virus.

Single-day death toll reports can be effected by delays in completion of death certificates and other factors, but the data from the state Department of Public Health makes clear Iowa is continuing to see an increase in deaths from the virus.

The seven-day rolling average of daily deaths in Iowa has risen over the past two weeks from nearly 16 deaths per day on Nov. 10 to 28 per day on Nov. 24, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University. In the month of November alone, 555 people in Iowa have died of COVID-19, state data shows.

Iowa has had 2,271 deaths due to COVID-19. That is the nation’s 29th highest death rate and the 23rd highest per capita, at 71.9 deaths per 100,000 people, according to Johns Hopkins.

The state data shows 3,365 additional positive cases were reported in the past 24 hours. Hospitalizations remained high at 1,305 with 198 people admitted in the last 24 hours.
