For music lovers looking for a break from the norm this evening, world-renowned concert pianist Sam Rotman is performing at Journey Church.

Rotman’s performance begins at 7 p.m. at the church, 700 E. Olive St.

Rotman has performed in more than 3,000 concerts, entertaining audiophiles in 61 countries with his skills on the ivory.

The Juilliard-trained pianist is known for performing classical pieces from Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and Schubert. His all-Beethoven series of performances will continue in Ankeny tomorrow.

Journey Church Pastor Jacob Rahrig said a live music event of this stature is something new for the church. He said Rotman is friends with members of the church which is why he is fitting a stop in Marshalltown into his schedule.

“We thought this was an awesome opportunity to get someone of his caliber here in Marshalltown and offer something free to the community,” Rahrig said. “It’s an opportunity to hear a very gifted and world-famous musician.”

Rotman played his first concert in 1967 at 16 years old. He performed with the San Antonio Symphony. During his career spanning more than 50 years he has released four albums, including “Portrait of a Piano” and “Piano Music of Beethoven.” His recordings have sold more than 75,000 copies.

Along with performing, Rotman will speak to the audience about his experiences.

“He’s going to share his life story and his journey from the time he was young until now and how God worked in his life,” Rahrig said.

Journey Church is capable of hosting as many concert goers that attend, according to Rahrig. If the concert is a success he would be open to hosting similar events in the future.

“It’ll be an opportunity to lift their spirits and get their mind off of all the troubles in the world and enjoy just a time of entertainment,” he said.
