Memorial Day celebrations return

Several area communities will hold events in remembrance of the lives lost in service of our country.

Albion kicks off Memorial Day early on Sunday while most other events will be held May 31. As always, keep an eye on the weather.

Marshalltown

The annual Memorial Day Service will be held at the Freedom Rock, 1301 S. Sixth St., at 10:30 a.m. with a performance by the Marshalltown Municipal Band, the Boy Scouts and Steve Storjohann will speak.

In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held at the newly-renovated Veterans Memorial Coliseum

The Iowa Veteran’s Home is unable to host its usual Memorial Day event due to COVID-19 this year. Instead it will again have a video presentation for its residents featuring a message from the chaplain and administrator.

Albion

At 1 p.m. Sunday, Albion will host its annual event at the Albion Cemetery. The service will be short this year and social distancing will be practiced. The event will be canceled if there is lightning.

Liscomb

The Harry E. Powers Post #87 will celebrate Memorial Day on May 31. The program will begin at 10 a.m. at the Liscomb Cemetery. Commander Norval Mosher will preside, with Laine Rittgers as Sergeant at Arms. Patriotic music will be provided by Kristy Case Rittgers, and Ron Galloway, Phil Gould and Ralph Norman. Ralph Norman, minister of the Liscomb Church of Christ, will deliver the message. Ellie Sheets will read “In Flanders Fields.” A roll call of deceased veterans will be read by Don Fiscus and Phil Gould. Military services, coordinated by Steve Sheets, will follow at 11 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the Liscomb Church of Christ. The public is encouraged and invited to attend.

Rhodes

Rhodes will have one event on Memorial day at Memorial Park on Main St. starting at 9:30 a.m.

At St. Joseph’s Cemetery and Eden Cemetery, there will be flags in place, but no services
