One of the many events the pandemic caused to be cancelled in the summer of 2020 was the Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) Bowl 4 Kids’ Sake.

While it was cancelled just weeks before it was supposed to happen last summer, this summer’s event is on schedule for June 25 and 26 at Wayward Social, 1101 S. Sixth St.

“We are excited to have everybody back together,” Heart of Iowa Big Brothers and Big Sisters Executive Director Lynne Carroll said. “It’s another chance to come together.”

There are four sessions for this year’s event, the first being on from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., June 25 and the other three from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 26.

Carroll said attendees should come prepared with masks, but they will not be required to be worn by those who are vaccinated. Those who are not vaccinated are recommended to wear masks.

Centers for Disease Control guidelines will be followed at the event, according to Carroll.

This year’s donation goal for the Bowl 4 Kids’ Sake is $25,000 which will go toward matches between volunteers and children throughout the year. This includes providing things for fun activities between volunteers and children that may not be possible otherwise.

Teams will consist of four to six players with the minimum donation per player being $55. Included in the event are two games of bowling and shoe rental.

Once the registration form has been completed or brought to the BBBS office, 31 S. First St., team captains can collect bowling and fundraising packets from Heart of Iowa BBBS.

Team registration for the event is due by June 14. Teams can pay their donation on the registration date or at the time that they are scheduled to bowl at the event. If a team doesn’t register by June 14, there is the possibility that they can still bowl in the event, provided there is enough space left.

There is still an opportunity for the Bowl 4 Kids’ Sake. Applications to be a sponsor close on June 8. To be a sponsor for the event, call 641-753-6370.

According to its website, Heart of Iowa BBBS’ mission is, “To offer a positive, broad-based program that focuses less on specific problems after they occur, and more on meeting youths’ most basic developmental needs.”

The Big Brothers Big Sisters program targets kids from the age of 6 and throughout high school, and tries to pair them with a mentor.
