Iowans have just one more opportunity to comment on the state’s first proposed redistricting plan.

The Temporary Redistricting Advisory Commission is a five-member bipartisan panel charged with talking to Iowans about redistricting. State law requires the commission to hold at least three public meetings before lawmakers convene to consider a new set of district maps.

The TRAC will hold its third and final meeting tonight at 7 p.m. The meeting is remote over video chatting program Webex. Written comments will be accepted until 6 p.m.

Iowans can sign up to speak at the meeting or submit a written comment online. The hearings will also be livestreamed and archived on YouTube.

In meetings on Monday and Tuesday, most commenters praised the Legislative Services Agency for drawing nonpartisan maps and urged lawmakers to vote in favor, regardless of whether the map suits their partisan interests.

After Wednesday’s meeting, the TRAC members and LSA staff will compile a report to deliver to lawmakers.

The commission’s report will be completed by Sept. 30, according to TRAC Chair Sue Lerdal. Lawmakers will return to Des Moines on Oct. 5 for the special session.
