T-R, Chamber to host candidate forums

The Times-Republican and the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce will host a pair of forums with candidates for Marshalltown city council, mayor and school board this week.

The first event will be held for school board candidates from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. There are four candidates — incumbent Karina Hernandez and newcomers Rebecca Kouang, Leah Stanley and Zachary Wahl — competing for three at-large four-year term seats. Appointed incumbent Bonnie Lowry, who is seeking to serve the remaining two years of her term, will face Melissa Nine for that seat.

The city council and mayoral event will be held at the same time and the same place on Thursday. In the city council race, Mike Ladehoff is running for re-election uncontested in the First Ward and Dex Walker is running uncontested in the Third Ward. Four candidates — Mark Eaton, Barry Kell, Jeff Schneider and Dean Stucky — are vying for two at-large seats. In the mayor’s race, incumbent Joel Greer is facing challenger Serina Stabenow.

Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce President John Hall and Times-Republican Managing Editor Robert Maharry will co-moderate both events, which are free to attend and open to the public.
