Laurel man found dead in submerged vehicle

A Laurel man was found deceased at the scene after Marshall County deputies responded to a call for a submerged vehicle in a farm pond along the 3300 block of Marsh Avenue between Laurel and Melbourne on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a press release issued Wednesday, 60-year-old Ricky Dean Pierson was determined to have died before emergency responders arrived at about 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Because of the position of the vehicle and the partially frozen water, the Story County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was called in to assist in recovering the vehicle and the body of Pierson.

The incident remains under investigation, and no foul play is currently suspected. In addition to the Story County Sheriff’s Office, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) received assistance from the Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Marshalltown Fire Department, the Melbourne Fire Department, UnityPoint Ambulance and Melbourne and Rhodes first responders.
