Road fatality reported in Marshall County

One man has died as a result of an accident along Highway 330 in Marshall County on Friday, Dec. 31, after freezing rain caused icy roads across the area.

According to a release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the 1200-mile of Highway 330 at approximately 2:05 p.m. The driver, 30-year-old Bazirake Kariya, was found trapped inside of his vehicle in a creek, and first responders and deputies began to administer first aid.

Kariya was then transported to the UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. UnityPoint Heath-Marshalltown Ambulance, the Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Marshalltown Fire Department, the Rhodes Fire Department, the Melbourne Fire Department and Melbourne and Rhodes First Responders all assisted the MCSO on the scene.

While the investigation into the crash continues, it is believed that the road conditions were a major factor. In all, deputies responded to 24 accident calls and a disabled motorist on Friday.
