Former inhabitant charged with arson
CONRAD — A house fire at 108 Washington St. in Conrad — allegedly set by one of the home’s inhabitants — was reported late Tuesday night and resulted in a total loss of the home and the death of a family pet.
According to a press release from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the house fire at approximately 11:17 p.m. and they were told a teenage girl was still in the home. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies discovered there was no one in the home other than the family pet, which was lost to the blaze, and the home was deemed a total loss.
After some investigation into the fire, resident Jacob Switzer, 45, was arrested and charged with first-degree arson, a class B felony. Court documents show that Switzer was also charged with animal abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor.
Switzer was transported to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, and later, he was booked into the Grundy County Jail, where he was still in custody as of Wednesday afternoon. Switzer is being held on a $50,000 bond, and according to court documents, his preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 26 at 1:30 p.m.
In addition to the GCSO, both the Conrad and Beaman Fire departments assisted at the scene, as did BCERTs, Grundy County Emergency Management and UnityPoint Health Marshalltown EMS.
