Two power outages affect Marshalltown Sunday

At approximately 10:22 a.m. Sunday morning, an unplanned power outage affected an estimated 1,058 Alliant Energy customers living on the south side of Marshalltown.

According to Alliant Spokesperson Tony Palese, animal damage caused equipment to fail at one of Alliant’s substations. This outage was addressed by Alliant and power was restored to about half of the affected customers by 11:47 a.m. All customers had power restored by 12:17 p.m.

This outage affected numerous south side businesses and residences, and it also affected traffic lights along Center Street from Southridge Road to Iowa Avenue. The Marshalltown Police Department notified the public about the affected traffic lights through a Facebook post, and at around 11:30 a.m., they put up stop signs to remind drivers that the intersections should be treated as four way stops for the duration of the outage.

Palese said the power outage affecting the south side was separate from a planned outage on West Main Street that began around 7 a.m. on Sunday morning and affected a limited number of Alliant customers. The planned outage was resolved at approximately 3 p.m. and was necessary to complete a customer request.
