Baur joins T-R staff as reporter

Nick Baur, a Winterset native and University of Northern Iowa graduate, officially joined the Times-Republican staff as a reporter on Wednesday morning, and he’s excited to hit the ground running in Marshall County.

Prior to the T-R, Baur spent about a year as the editor at The Grundy Register in Grundy Center, where he learned the ins and outs of reporting, writing and photography at a weekly publication. He described himself as innately and inherently curious, but he said he didn’t consider journalism as a career until college.

“Throughout high school, I loved writing. I had a really good English teacher in high school that really fostered my love of writing,” he said. “Then I majored in English, and I was thinking about becoming a writer. But creative writers don’t always have the easiest time paying the bills.”

As he considered his next move, Baur said the appeal and faster pace of a daily paper like the T-R were strong factors in his decision, and he looks forward to covering a community and a county where something is always happening.

“I just want to kind of discover Marshalltown, Marshall County and the surrounding area. I kind of know a little bit, but I really don’t know a ton (yet),” he said. “But I think that’s one of the cool parts of our job is that we get to learn so much.”

T-R General Manager Rhonda James, who worked with Baur in Grundy Center, is happy about the opportunity to reunite with him.

“We are fortunate to have Nick join the team. I can not put into words how exciting it is to work with Nick again. The news desk now has a dynamic duo with Managing Editor Robert Maharry and news reporter Nick Baur,” she said. “Having recently worked with Nick was a privilege. He encompasses the qualities of a good newspaper journalist. Our readers will find he has a way with words, is very knowledgeable and works diligently to provide great coverage. Nick reminded me a lot of Rob when he first started. He was filling big shoes in Rob’s absence and did very well. The Times-Republican now has two of the best journalists I have seen. Having both Rob and Nick is bringing us the best of both worlds.”

Maharry is also glad to have Baur onboard, and the new reporter got off to a strong start by filing a story during his first full day on the job.

“Nick is exactly the kind of person you want on your staff. He’s smart, he’s curious and he’s ready to get to work,” Maharry said. “I can’t wait to see what he’ll do here.”
